In the second half of this year the metaverse Ransomware threats are spreading in small groups at the same time, says a new report from cybersecurity firm Check Point Software.
In late 2022, the ransomware ecosystem will become even more fragmented. This would allow attackers to “hide in plain sight” more effectively in “many small and medium-sized groups rather than a few large groups,” the study said.
Cryptocurrencies will continue to be targeted by attackers looking to compromise and hijack assets. The first attack in the metaverse “exploits a vulnerability in Smarthis contracts,” the report states.
Cyberattacks worldwide are up 42%. Ransomware has become the number one threat in the world.
The report suggests that ransomware groups now operate like business as usual and are more structured than before. They set targets to strike with attacks that would become national level weapons.
Maya Horowitz, vice president of research at Check Point Software, said:
“Hacktivist groups will continue to tailor their attacks to the national agendas of their choice, especially as the Russia-Ukraine war is still ongoing,” the report said.
